Light cotton layers, a thin rain jacket rather than an umbrella, sandals that survive water and one dry pair of shoes. October needs the jacket daily (658 mm); June needs nothing but shade (34.9°C); January evenings want a layer (19.7°C).

Clothes
Cotton and linen, loose, and more of it than you think: two showers a day is normal, and a shirt that dries overnight in an air-conditioned room is worth three that do not. Da Nang is 25°C to 35°C almost every day of the year, so there is no packing problem to solve here.
The exception is the mountains. Ba Na's summit runs 17–20°C in summer — 1,500 m makes its own weather — and winter nights up there drop below 15°C. One light jacket covers both the mountain and a January evening on the river.
Shoes, and why this is the one that matters
Two pairs, not one: sandals for the wet and the beach, and one pair of closed shoes that stay dry. In October the pavement is wet most days and leather takes 24 hours to recover; a single pair means a single day of wet feet followed by a week of them.
Grip matters more than style. Marble stairs at the Marble Mountains are polished, and the steps up to the Thuy Son terrace are the slickest surface on a normal itinerary — 15,000₫ for the lift is cheaper than a fall.
Rain kit
A thin rain jacket beats an umbrella in Da Nang, because the rain arrives sideways on the beach road and an umbrella turns inside out in the wind that comes with it. A jacket also keeps your hands empty for a phone, which is what you are actually protecting.
Add a dry bag or a zip pouch for documents, and accept that everything else will get damp at some point. October averages 658 mm over 21 rain days; you are not going to stay dry, you are going to keep your passport dry.
What to buy there instead
- Ponchos, flip-flops and umbrellas. They are sold on every corner in the rainy season and cost less than the luggage allowance you would spend bringing them.
- Sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Both are available in pharmacies and convenience stores, and both are things airlines make awkward.
- A second swimsuit. Two is the right number in a place where nothing dries quickly.
What not to buy there: proper walking shoes in large sizes, and anything technical. The city sells sandals and fashion trainers well; it does not sell hiking footwear, and the Marble Mountains are where you would want it.

If you are packing for a two-week trip that spans September into October, pack for October. The rain arrives in the last week of August and the first week of September and does not really stop until December.
Three things people forget
A dry bag for the phone and passport is the one item nobody packs and everybody wants by day two. The second is a light layer for the mountain: Ba Na runs 17–20°C at the summit in summer, and people arrive in beach clothes and spend the afternoon in a gift shop.
The third is a second swimsuit. Nothing dries quickly here, and a wet swimsuit in a suitcase overnight is how a good trip starts to smell like a wet trip.

Questions people ask
What should I pack for Da Nang in October?
A thin rain jacket, sandals plus one dry pair of shoes, a dry bag for documents, and one indoor plan per day. October averages 658 mm over 21 rain days.
Do I need warm clothes in Da Nang?
One light layer. Days are 25–35°C; January nights average 19.7°C, and the Ba Na summit drops below 15°C on winter evenings.
Can I buy rain gear there?
Yes — ponchos and umbrellas are sold everywhere in the rainy season and cost very little. Proper walking shoes in large sizes are harder to find.
How many pairs of shoes should I bring?
Two: sandals and one closed pair. In the rainy season a single pair means wet feet every day, because nothing dries overnight.
