What to do in Da Nang when it rains

Heavy rain, real opening hours and a plan that keeps the day moving — including the indoor places that actually stay open in October.

Short answer

Rain in Da Nang is heavy but rarely all day. Build each day around one indoor stop with fixed hours — the Cham Museum (07:30–17:00, 60,000₫) or the Marble Mountains (07:00–17:00, from 40,000₫) — then use the dry window when it comes.

When it actually rains in Da Nang

Da Nang has one wet season and one long dry stretch. The city's tourism portal puts the rainy season at September to December and the dry season at roughly March to August. The meteorological numbers are sharper than that: the Da Nang station records about 2,400 mm a year, and 1,810 mm of it — roughly three quarters — falls in September, October, November and December.

October is the month that decides your trip. The long-term average is 658 mm over 21 rain days — about 1.4 times November, and almost four times August. If you have one week in Da Nang and it lands in mid-October, plan as if one full day will be lost, and be pleasantly surprised when it is not.

Two things follow from that table. First, a wet day is usually a wet half-day: the rain arrives in heavy bursts, often in the afternoon or overnight, and the street drains within an hour. Second, humidity stays high between showers — 25°C to 30°C with the air close enough that walking two blocks leaves you damp either way, so a plan built on being outdoors in the gaps and indoors in the downpours works better than a plan of waiting it out in a hotel room.

Indoor stops with hours and prices

These are the reliable ones: fixed opening hours, published ticket prices, and enough to fill two to three hours each. Prices and hours below come from the Da Nang city tourism portal's 2026 admission list, checked on 2 November 2026. Vietnamese visitors and Da Nang residents pay less at the museums — the resident rate is noted where it is published.

Note the closing times rather than the opening times. Every museum on this list shuts between 16:30 and 17:00, which means a 15:30 start gives you an hour and a half, and a 16:15 start gives you a wasted taxi. The Marble Mountains are the exception: the gates close at 17:00 but the site needs two hours if you want Thuy Son and Am Phu cave both.

A rainy day, hour by hour

This is the shape that works: one museum in the morning while the rain is heaviest, a long lunch, then the outdoor hour in the afternoon gap. It assumes you are staying near My Khe or An Thuong, which is where most first-time visitors end up.

The Dragon Bridge is worth timing properly: it throws fire for two minutes and water for three, starting at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on major public holidays. It is a five-minute event, not an evening, so pair it with dinner on the east bank and walk across afterwards rather than standing in the rain for an hour beforehand.

What to move to another day

Three things on a normal Da Nang itinerary lose most of their value in heavy rain, and it is worth moving them rather than doing them wet.

A rest hour in the middle of a wet day

LENA Nails & Beauty (our salon)

By late afternoon on a wet day your shoes are finished and the museums are closing. LENA is an indoor stop with fixed prices and no weather risk, and all three branches are a short Grab ride from My Khe and An Thuong.

The Deluxe Foot Spa is 300,000₫ (about 12 USD): shaping, cuticle work, heel scrub, dead skin removal, a hot towel and a cream massage, with no soak. The VIP 4-in-1 at 400,000₫ (about 16 USD) adds the soak in a single-use liner, a salt scrub, mud mask and lotion, with five scents. Staff speak English and Vietnamese; open 8:30–20:30.

Questions people ask

Is Da Nang worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes, if you plan around it. Rooms cost less, the beach is empty between showers, and the indoor stops on this page are the same ones you would visit in the dry season. What you should not do is book a five-day trip in mid-October and expect five beach days.

Does it rain all day in Da Nang?

Rarely. October averages 658 mm across 21 rain days, which works out at about 31 mm on a day it rains — heavy bursts rather than constant drizzle. The pattern is usually a wet morning or a wet afternoon, not both, and streets drain within an hour.

Should I still book Ba Na Hills in the rain?

Only if the forecast is clear for the morning you go, or if you can use the three-day ticket. The park is open 08:00–22:00, but cloud at 1,500 m hides the Golden Bridge and the view that justifies the 1,000,000₫ ticket.

What should I pack for a wet week?

A light rain jacket rather than an umbrella — the rain comes sideways on the beach road — plus sandals that survive water and one dry pair of shoes for the flight home. Humidity sits around 25–30°C, so cotton dries overnight in an air-conditioned room.

Can you swim at My Khe in the rainy season?

Between showers, yes, but check the flag. Red flags go up when the swell and runoff are strong, and after heavy rain the water near river mouths carries debris. Early morning is usually the calmest window.
